My time in Costa Rica taught me much the same thing. A smile is nearly always welcome, and any interaction is an excuse for a conversation out in the country. It’s great to hear about your progress and experiences there.

Assumptions from both sides can result to be quite uncomfortable – asking (preferably to the same gender in a non-group environment – at least in Turkey) can clear a lot of wrong info.

Try to ask about yourself to your close female friends – how they see you and your behavior/clothing/etc – might get surprised and learn a lot of useful things.

P.S. Wouldn’t recommend assuming that Turkey (especially Southeast/and some parts of the city) is safe for traveling when girls are alone and if one of them sticks out too much as a foreigner (as most people in this region might be polite but also uneducated/or wrong upbringing combined with mostly quite wrong assumptions (about foreigners and/or differently attire) sometimes).

Welcome to Gaziantep! Just found your pics on flickr as I occasionally do check it for interesting pics. I hope you’ll enjoy your time in Gaziantep. I might drop in for comments in flickr (if I ever get to post my own pics) or here if you don’t mind.

1. make sure that they are already completely drunk (unlucky for you if nobody is drinking or somebody catches you on video during the act…)
2. no idea… I guess Gaziantep food would be ok?

Life without apostrophes must be awfully difficult. I hope you can find some soon. Glad you made it there, at any rate. Excellence in travel adventures and the resulting stories is directly proportional to the discomfort and hassle of getting there, so consider your trip a good omen of things to come.

Congratulations on getting there! We were tracking all your flights and various delays and wondering how the heck you were going to be able to run across JFK in certain exceedingly small amounts of time. We’re all glad to see you made it there in one piece!
